* Sri Lanka police to probe inefficiency of police at Mattala airport and Hambantota harbor
Fri, Apr 18, 2014, 11:49 am SL Time, ColomboPage News Desk, Sri Lanka.

Apr 18, Colombo: Sri Lanka police media spokesman Ajith Rohana, SSP, said that an investigation is underway into yesterday's incident of a mob attacking a group of MPs of the major opposition United National Party (UNP) at Mattala Airport and Hambantota harbor.

The investigation is being conducted to determine whether there was any negligence by the police as there were media reports that the police at the two sites had ignored the skirmish.

The police media spokesman said that two police officers each of the VIP security had been deployed for the security of the MPs and they should have informed the relevant police station in case of the security of the MPs was compromised. However, they had not informed so, he added.

Police media spokesman told Derana TV yesterday that the MPs had not sought security from police during their visit to the airport and harbor, the development of which had been criticized by the opposition for alleged inefficiency and malpractices.

MP Ajith P. Perera told media that the MPs had informed the Deputy Inspector General of Police in charge of Southern Province about the situation.
