* Sri Lankan President offers condolences to South Korean counterpart on ferry tragedy

Apr 17, Colombo: Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksa has sent a message of condolence to South Korean President Park Geun-hye on the passenger ferry accident that took place off the southern resort island of Jeju yesterday.

In his message, President Rajapaksa, while conveying the heartfelt and profound condolences of the Government and the people of Sri Lanka to his South Korean counterpart, has expressed confidence that with the characteristic courage and fortitude of the Korean people, they will be able to overcome their sorrow.

Excellency,

It is with sorrow and dismay that I learnt of the tragic incident of a passenger ferry, carrying mainly school children, capsizing and sinking off the southern resort island of Jeju.

The Government and the people of Sri Lanka join me in conveying our heartfelt and profound condolences to Your Excellency and the people of the Republic of Korea, particularly the families of the bereaved, and offer prayers to those who have been injured in this catastrophe. At this difficult hour, our thoughts are with you and your people.

I am confident that with the characteristic courage and fortitude of your people, they will be able to find the solace to overcome their sorrow. The Government and the people of Sri Lanka stand in solidarity with you and the people of the Republic of Korea, in coming to terms with this tragedy.

Please accept, Excellency, the assurances of my highest consideration.
