Mon, Apr 14, 2014, 11:00 pm SL Time, ColomboPage News Desk, Sri Lanka.

Apr 14, Colombo: The government of Sri Lanka is taking measures to set up special courts to hear and expedite cases on abuse of women and children.

Justice Minister Rauf Hakeem has said that special courts will be established to expedite the hearing of women and child abuse cases.

The Minister has noted that similar courts are currently functioning in Colombo and Jaffna and two such courts will be set up in Kandy and Kurunegala as well.

The Minister has also observed that special arrangements will be made to ensure privacy of cases heard in these courts in order to assure the security of the victims.

According to Minister Hakeem, while there are statistics on suspects and accused, statistical information on each offence is not available on record.
