* Sri Lankan government constructs 65,000 housing units for low income people in capital

Apr 13, Colombo: The Sri Lankan government is constructing 65,000 semi luxury housing units within the city limits of the Colombo Municipal Council for the low income families in the capital city.

The houses are being constructed under the supervision of the Secretary of the Defense and Urban Development Gotabhaya Rajapaksa.

Already 16,000 families have been vested with the ownership of the new houses, the additional Secretary to the Ministry of Urban Development Janaka Kurukulasooriya said.

Each housing unit constructed at a cost of Rs. 3 million has two bed rooms, bathroom, pipe borne water facilities and other requirements.

The government will spend nearly Rs. 200 billion for the project, the official said.
