Apr 09, Colombo: Sri Lankan parliament will award a red carpet welcome to Sri Lanka's championship winning national cricket team at the House today.

Speaker, Chamal Rajapaksa, will welcome the winners of the ICC T20 World Cup to the House and Members of Parliament from both the government and the opposition will felicitate the national cricketers for their outstanding contribution to national pride and their accomplishment by bringing a World Cup home.

The team will be taken to the Speaker's Guest Gallery at 5.00 p.m. and will remain there until 7:00 p.m.

Leader of the House, Nimal Siripala de Silva, will move the House to a congratulatory vote, which will be seconded by Acting Opposition Whip, John Amaratunga.

The party leaders at their meeting on Tuesday decided to felicitate the national team at parliament.

The team returned to the country yesterday after winning the ICC Twenty20 World Championship by beating India in the final in Dhaka Sunday.

Thousands of fans lined the streets and thronged to Galle Face Tuesday night to greet the cricketers who were paraded in an open top double decker bus from the airport.

President Mahinda Rajapaksa received the team at Temple Trees and offered his congratulations.
