Sept 30, Colombo: The Child Development and Women's Affairs Minister of Sri Lanka has said that public caning should be proposed for child abusers and rapists.
Child Development and Women's Affairs Minister Tissa Karaliyadde told the media that Sri Lanka has seen a drastic increase in reports of child abuse and rape.
The Minister had previously sought tougher laws to curb the increase in cases of child abuse and rape.
It was earlier proposed that the death sentence or life in prison be given to rapists, but the death sentence was not taken up since it is not implemented in Sri Lanka.
Karaliyadde has said that the latest proposal will be presented to parliament and the Justice Ministry.
The Minister has added that regulations will also be proposed on media publicity with regards to rape.
