Sept 29, Colombo: A group of party stalwarts of the main opposition United National Party (UNP) have taken measures to organize a walk from Matara to Colombo to urge party leader Ranil Wickremasinghe to step down after the dismal performance of the party at the recent provincial council polls.
The co-chairs of an organization called Jathika Pavura (National Wall) Provincial Councilors Maithri Gunaratne and Shiral Lakthilaka, who were sacked from the party, have spearheaded the organizing of the protest march.
Jathika Pavura has decided to launch the walk to oust the leader from the Vishnu Temple at Dondra in Matara district on October 05.
The first lap of the walk will be up to Weligama. Second day, it will proceed to Galle, third day to Hikkaduwa, fourth day to Kosgoda, fifth day to Katukurunda, sixth day to Moratuwa and the last day from Moratuwa to Colombo.
They have planned to collect one million signatures to a petition urging Wickremasinghe to resign.
