Sept 29, Colombo: Sri Lanka's major Tamil party, Tamil National Alliance (TNA) says the recent judgment delivered by the Supreme Court on land powers to the provincial councils does not conform with previous judgments issued by the Court.
TNA Leader R. Sampanthan told the media that the issue of land powers has been a key cause for the ethnic conflict.
He explained that the 13th Amendment to the Constitution has broadly accepted the allocation of land powers to the provinces, which has been accepted by earlier judgments delivered in the Supreme Court.
However, Sampanthan said that the TNA would carefully study the most recent Supreme Court judgment on land powers and decide on the next course of action.
A three judge bench of the Supreme Court headed by Chief Justice Mohan Peiris ruled that land powers should be vested with the central government and not with the provincial councils.
