Sept 25, Colombo: Sri Lanka's ruling party United People's Freedom Alliance (UPFA) has decided to appoint the candidates who achieved the highest number of preferential votes at the two Provincial Council elections the UPFA won as the Chief Ministers.
Prime Minister D.M. Jayaratne has reportedly told a group of political leaders about the ruling party's decision last night at a meeting.
Accordingly, the Prime Minister's son Anuradha Jayaratne will be appointed as the Chief Minister of the Central Province, the Prime Minister has said.
Political analysts said that the name of the former Chief Minister Sarath Ekanayake was also being considered to the post of the Chief Minister. Ekanayake polled the second highest number of preferential votes.
According to the decision of the government Dayasiri Jayasekara has been verified as the new Chief Minister of the North Western Provincial Council. He gained a record number of preferential votes at this election.
