Sept 25, Mannar: A Sri Lankan court Wednesday ordered to release 41 Indian fishermen arrested by the Sri Lankan Navy.
The Mannar Magistrate's Court has ordered to release the fishermen from Tamil Nadu arrested along with their boats when they were illegally fishing in Sri Lankan waters.
The Navy arrested 20 of the fishermen on August 03 and seized five boats. The other 21 fishermen were arrested on July 06 along with 5 trawlers in the waters north of Mannar on July 6th.
Mannar Magistrate Anandhi Kanagaratnam has however, ordered to detain the 10 boats seized by the Navy, PTI reported.
Sri Lanka recently changed its policy on the Indian fishermen invading country's waters. Instead of the earlier method of 'catch and release' now the poaching fishermen will be detained and produced in court. The fishermen will be released after they plead guilty and their boats will be confiscated.
Another 35 Tamil Nadu fishermen released by the Magistrate of Puttalam Court on Monday are reportedly waiting for boats to ferry them to India.
