Sept 24, Colombo: A group of lawyers in Sri Lanka plans to propose to the Bar Association of Sri Lanka (BASL) to look at initiating legal action against political candidates who have failed to declare their assets and liabilities.
Attorney Gunaratne Wanninayake has told the media that the lawyers have decided to take up the issue since the opposition political parties in the country have failed to address it.
He has explained that in the event candidates fail to declare their assets and liabilities prior to the election, the Elections Commissioner would not be able to look into the assets gathered by the respective politician during his/her political career.
According to Wanninayake, The proposal by the group of lawyers is to be handed over to the BASL at its next executive committee meeting.
Meanwhile, Transparency International of Sri Lanka has stated that only 65 percent of the candidates who contested at the recently concluded provincial council elections have declared their assets and liabilities.
