Sept 23, Colombo: The Sri Lankan government has put forward plans to set up four cement factories adjacent to the main ports in the country under the programme to establish new industrial parks and enterprises within new and existing port premises.
Accordingly, four cement grinding and packaging plants will be constructed in the Colombo, Galle and Trincomalee port premises.
The Sri Lanka Ports Authority will be making arrangements to provide facilities to establish the cement factories on a proposal made by President Mahinda Rajapaksa, in his capacity as the Minister of Ports and Highways under the "One Cement Factory in One Harbor" concept.
The cabinet has recently approved to lease the lands owned by the harbors to construct the factories and the lands have already been released on lease agreements.
The SLPA points out that it is a common feature in the world to establish factories that use heavy machinery such as these in the premises of the Ports to reduce operational costs associated with transport and other needs to make it possible to market the finished products at competitive prices.
