Sept 22, Colombo: The Democratic Party led by Sri Lanka's former Army Commander Sarath Fonseka has been placed in the second position among the opposition political parties at the recently concluded provincial council elections.
The Democratic Party secured five seats at the provincial council elections that concluded yesterday.
The party won three seats in the North Western Provincial council and two seats in the central Provincial council.
The Marxist party Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP), which was considered to hold the second position among opposition political parties, won only one seat in the North Western Provincial council.
The Democratic Party has stated that the outcome of the provincial council elections showed that the people needed a new alternative force.
