Sept 21, Colombo: Sri Lanka's Kalutara Magistrate Court yesterday granted bail to a Buddhist monk who leads an extremist group when he was produced before the magistrate for failing to appear in court.
The court had issued warrants to arrest Ven. Akmeemana Dayaratna Thero, the President of Sinhala Ravaya.
He surrendered to the court yesterday (20th) through his counsel and the court released him on a Rs. 100,000 bond.
The Buddhist monk is accused of holding a meeting in Maggona town to call for a protest.
Kalutara Additional Magistrate Ayesha Abdeen had banned the meeting on a motion by the Payagala police but a group led by Dayaratne Thero and several other Buddhist monks held the meeting on August 01, disregarding the injunction.
Kalutara Magistrate Court ordered 26 persons to appear in the court on August 18. The case was postponed to January 29, 2014.
