Sept 14, Colombo: Sri Lanka's Marxist party Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) has alleged the government of planning to rig the votes of Army deserters and people who have migrated and dead.
According to the Propaganda Secretary of the JVP, parliamentarian Vijitha Herath, the government has launched an illegal election campaign to rig the votes at the upcoming provincial council elections.
The JVP MP has said that the party appointed a committee to prevent vote rigging at the forthcoming polls, Ceylon Today reported. The committee is also aimed at preventing election malpractices on the polling day.
Herath said that the party expects to get the assistance of political party representatives, members of civil society as well as election monitoring organizations, in this regard.
A senior government official dismissed the JVP MP's allegations as "pure imagination".
Meanwhile, two teams of foreign election observers have arrived in the country. The foreign observers will be deployed to their assigned areas on Monday, the Election Secretariat said.
