Sept 13, Colombo: Railway authorities in Sri Lanka say there are no moves to increase the train fares in the country any time soon.
Superintendent of Operations, Sri Lanka Railways (SLR), L.A.M. Ratnayake told the media that Sri Lanka Railways has not had any discussion regarding increase of train fares.
He stressed that there was no truth to the media report that say train fares would be increased by 25 percent.
The train fare hike was speculated following reports of the Rs. 370 million annual loss incurred by Sri Lanka Railways.
General Secretary of the All Ceylon Railway Employees General Union (ACREGU), Sumathipala Manawadu has however said that the losses could be covered without increasing train fares.
He added that the authorities nevertheless were not focusing on any alternative way of recovering the losses.
