Sept 13, Colombo: An election monitoring body in Sri Lanka has requested the Human Rights Commission in Sri Lanka (HRCSL) to send its representatives to observe the Northern Provincial Council election.
The People's Action for a Free and Fair election (PAFFREL) has requested the Human Rights Commission to send its representatives to the North to look into the incidents where military personnel were allegedly engaged in election campaign.
PAFFREL Executive Director, Rohana Hettiarachchi has said the organization has received many complaints from the Jaffna and Kilinochchi Districts where military personnel are accused of engaging in election campaigning work.
"We requested the Human Rights Commission to send a group of representatives as poll observers to look into this matter before and on the election date to ensure a free and fair election in the North," he has noted.
Hettiarachchi has added that
it is important to create confidence in the minds of the people in the North on their right to vote.
