Sept 12, Colombo: Sri Lanka's main opposition United National Party (UNP) says that the happiness level and freedom are high among people who are affiliated to the government.
Referring to Sri Lanka's ranking of 137 among 156 countries in 2013 World Happiness Index, UNP MP Dr. Harsha de Silva told a news conference that a majority of the people in the country are not as happy as the government claims.
He explained that the government was taking foreign loans at high interest rate of 9.25% and 9.5%, which are finally borne by the people.
He added that the extent of the foreign loans taken by the government showed the magnitude of the current financial crisis.
Dr. de Silva claimed that the government while blaming international conspiracies for the problems faced by the country, on the other hand has resorted to taking loans from foreign lenders.
