Sept 10, Colombo: Wildlife Resources Conservation Minister of Sri Lanka Gamini Vijith Vijayamuni Zoysa has requested the Defense Ministry and the Public Security, Law and Order Ministry for assistance to protect national parks and sanctuaries.
Soysa has said that he sought assistance in writing from the security forces and the police to protect the national parks and sanctuaries.
He noted that assistance was needed since there are very few wildlife officers.
The security forces personnel and the police are to be used to crack down on treasure hunting, illegal cultivation of ganja plants inside parks, and the poaching of elephants for their tusks.
The Minister added that there will be a limit on crackers given free to villagers to chase away elephants.
