Sept 09, Colombo: Sri Lanka's main opposition United National Party (UNP) says the government is privatizing state institutions.
UNP General secretary Tissa Attanayake said that the government while speaking of a non-privatizing policy was engaged in privatizing state institutions.
He told a news conference that the government was handing over major construction projects to Chinese companies. He added that valuable state lands are being mortgaged to China.
According to Attanayake, Chinese companies including the China Harbour Engineering Company Ltd (CHEC) that built Hambantota Port, Mattala Airport was now controlling interests in nerve centers such as the Colombo Port Southern Terminal, and seven main roads in the country.
