Sept 09, Colombo: An ally of Sri Lanka's ruling alliance, the Jathika Hela Urumaya (JHU) today said it will no longer participate in the Parliamentary Select Committee (PSC) appointed to address the national issue of power devolution.
The layman leader of the monk-led nationalist party and government Minister Patali Champika Ranawaka announced at a media briefing today that the party took this decision since the government failed to abolish the 13th Amendment to the Constitution before holding the Northern Provincial council Election.
He said the party is not satisfied with the slow pace of the PSC in amending the 13th Amendment.
The JHU was vehemently against the land and police powers given to the provinces under the 13th Amendment and called for amending the Constitution to take away those powers from the provinces before holding the elections to the Northern Provincial Council scheduled for September 21.
The party in May this year introduced a 19th Amendment to the Constitution to amend the Constitution to repeal the 13th amendment.
