Sept 06, Colombo: A Sri Lankan court today acquitted the main suspect of the 2009 assassination of Sunday Leader editor-in-chief Lasantha Wickrematunga.
The Mount Lavinia Magistrate's Court today acquitted Kandegedara Priyawansa, the chief suspect of the murder case of the veteran journalist.
The suspect was acquitted from all charges and released on bail by the Mount Lavinia Chief Magistrate Ranga Wimalasena, according to the instructions of the Attorney General.
The suspect was an intelligence officer of Sri Lanka Army who was arrested in connection with the murder.
T. Jesudasan, an owner of a garage, was also arrested together with him but he died in the remand.
Unidentified gunmen shot Wickrematunga on January 08, 2009 at Attidiya as he was driving to work. He succumbed to injuries after nearly three hours of surgery.
Terrorism Investigations Division of police conducted investigation regarding the assassination of the journalist. No other suspect is in custody.
The international community and media right organizations consider Wickrematunga's assassination and lack of progress in meting out justice to his killers as serious human right violations by Sri Lanka.
