Sept 05, Colombo: Transparency International of Sri Lanka (TISL) says that a majority of the candidates contesting the forthcoming provincial council elections are yet to declare their assets.
Senior Manager, Public Relations of TISL Shan Wijetunge told the media that out of the 3,785 candidates who are contesting the upcoming provincial council elections, approximately 1,100 candidates have declared assets and liabilities.
He said that most candidates who have declared their assets are those who are contesting from the Kandy and Kurunegala Districts.
According to Wijetunge, the TISL keeps monitoring the work of the candidates and notify the Election Commissioner about incidents of election law violations.
However, he added that the situation this time was better than the previous provincial council elections.
"In previous PC elections, even less than 30% candidates declared their assets and liabilities. The Election Commissioner stressed that actions will be taken against candidates who do not declare their assets and liabilities even if they lose the election," Wijetunga said.
