Sept 03, Colombo: Sri Lanka's Election Secretariat will deploy 40,000 public sector employees for election duty at the upcoming provincial council elections later this month , the Deputy Elections Commissioner M.M. Mohammed said.
In addition, 7,000 police officers will be deployed to provide security at polling booths, the official said. Additional police teams will be used for mobile services. The Election official assured that all measures will be taken to hold a free and fair election.
Elections for the North, North Western and Central Provincial Councils will be held on September 21.
Election duty is considered an essential service and the public servants are deployed to carry out the duties regardless of their consent.
Meanwhile, the ruling United People's Freedom Alliance (UPFA) has decided to intensify its election campaign, especially in the Northern Province, in the next few days Northern Campaign Leader Minister Susil Premajayantha said.
