Oct 28, Colombo: The shelter for destitute in Ambalantota in Sri Lanka is full of inmates and reaching its full capacity, the Superintendent of the Ridiyagama Detention Centre in Ambalantota has said.
The maximum capacity of the Detention Centre is 600 inmates and there are currently 595 inmates.
According to the Superintendent, there is no way to include more inmates to the detention center since the buildings at the center are dilapidated and most of the current inmates don't have any family to go to.
The detention center was established in 1975 to house beggars and homeless people brought from Colombo during the Non-Aligned Movement Summit in 1976.
The local media has reported that 128 beggars who were held at the Colombo Remand Prison were transferred to the detention center ahead of the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) in Colombo next month.
The detention center is financially supported by the Southern Provincial Council and not the central Ministry of Social Services or Department of Social Services.
