Oct 25, Jaffna: Sri Lanka's first ever elected Northern Provincial Council will meet today for the first time with the opening of a new building for the Council in Kaithady in Jaffna.
Governor of the Province Major General G.A. Chandrasiri and the Chief Minister of the Northern Provincial Council C.V. Vigneswaran will declare open the new building that will house the Council.
The building was earlier meant to be the office of the Chief Secretary of the Northern Province. Later government decided to keep the Chief Secretary's office where it is at present in Jaffna and grant the new building to the Provincial Council.
Governor of the Province said that the first stage of the provincial council complex has been completed at a cost of Rs. 100 million rupees.
The ground floor of the three-story building will house the Council. The second floor is given for the Provincial Council departments and the third floor will house the Provincial Council ministries.
After completing the second phase of the building complex all ministries of the Northern PC will be brought to the premises to facilitate the public to obtain all services from one place.
The inaugural meeting of the Northern Provincial Council will be held today at the new building. A Chairman and a Deputy Chairman for the Northern Provincial Council are to be elected today.
