Oct 23, Colombo: The Speaker of Sri Lanka says that he would consider live broadcasting of parliamentary proceedings via electronic media.
Speaker Chamal Rajapaksa has made this comment during the unveiling of a giant LED screen at the Jayanthipura public car park near parliament in Kotte to telecast parliamentary proceedings live from today.
Rajapaksa said that he would consider the live telecast/broadcast of parliamentary proceedings after one month of giant screen broadcasting of parliamentary sessions.
He noted that it is important for people to see how their elected representatives behave in parliament and the legislators would therefore have to set an example through their behavior in the House.
The Speaker has also noted that he would strictly abide by the parliamentary Standing Orders and would be unable to expunge any proceedings during a live telecast.
According to Rajapaksa, the parliamentarians need to maintain high standards.
