Oct 23, Colombo: Sri Lanka Customs today destroyed a stock of contraceptive drugs smuggled into the country in a potato container from Pakistan.
Customs officers on 27th April this year seized the container with 30,000 vials of a contraceptive drug carefully hidden among the potatoes.
The drug was identified as a contraceptive vaccine named Depo - Provera, a vial containing 150mg/ml of Medroxyprogesterone Acetate, a popularly used contraceptive both by the government and private hospitals.
The injectable drug stock estimated to be valued at Rs. 30 million was the largest stock of contraceptives ever smuggled in, the Customs officials said.
The Customs arrested the consignee of the shipment, a Pakistani national named Ashraf Muhammad when he came to claim the container.
The suspect was fined Rs. 500,000 and deported from the country, Director of Customs Revenue Task Force, Mali Piyasena said.
