Oct 23, Colombo: The Higher Education Ministry of Sri Lanka says it would grant scholarships to foreign students in local universities.
Higher Education Ministry Secretary Dr. Sunil Jayantha Navaratne said the government plans to award scholarships in local universities to students from 58 countries.
He said that 100 scholarships would be awarded under the Higher Education Ministry's long term vision to make Sri Lanka, the hub of academic excellence by the year 2020.
Among the countries that are included in the scholarship programme are Afghanistan, Brazil, Canada, France, Ethiopia, Malaysia, Indonesia, Pakistan, Turkey and the USA.
According to the Higher Education Ministry, Sri Lanka would be the best country in the world to learn about irrigation, Buddhism, Ayurveda, history and to conduct research related to war and peace.
Dr. Navaratne said that the foreign students will serve as Sri Lanka's ambassadors and will help promote the country as an education hub.
