Oct 22, Colombo: The government of Sri Lanka has decided to hold back two gazette notifications on regulations to establish two casinos in Colombo.
The two gazettes were tabled in parliament by Investment Promotions Minister Lakshman Yapa Abeywardena under the Strategic Development Act.
The regulations were to be taken up for debate this week in parliament along with the special Order to grant tax exemptions to a casino project in Colombo.
The order under the Act was to be taken up for debate in parliament on October 24th and 25th.
However, the government has last night decided to hold back the two gazette notifications following pressure from opposition political parties, several governing party allies and religious leaders to withdraw the regulations.
The local media has stated that the government would re-introduce the regulations after making some amendments to the gazette notifications.
