Oct 20, Colombo: The inaugural meeting of Sri Lanka's first ever elected Northern Provincial Council will take place on October 25, Friday.
The inaugural meeting will be held at Kaithadi in Jaffna. The building to house the Northern Provincial Council is however still under construction.
A Chairman for the Provincial Council will be elected at this meeting and the election is expected to be contentious.
Drama is expected to take place at the election of the chairman since nine members elected from the Tamil National Alliance (TNA) have already revolted against the leadership of the TNA and the Chief Minister C.V. Vigneswaran.
The nine members of TNA constituent parties EPRLF, TELO and TULF protesting the ITAK, another constituent of the alliance, for taking decisions without consulting the other member parties, boycotted the swearing-in ceremony held at the Weerasingham Hall in Jaffna on October 11 under the patronage of Chief Minister.
Later on they took oaths separately at different locations.
