Oct 20, Colombo: Sri Lanka navy personnel are again accused of attacking a group of Indian fishermen from Rameswaram in Tamil Nadu and injuring four of them.
The fishermen, who went to the sea in a boat early on Sunday morning, were allegedly attacked by the Sri Lankan Navy men near the Kachchativu islet, a PTI report said.
The Naval personnel were also accused of damaging more than 10 fishing nets of the fishermen.
The fishermen have returned and admitted themselves to various hospitals without informing the authorities, the report further said.
Officials are reportedly making enquiries with various hospitals to find out where the fishermen have been admitted.
Sri Lankan Navy denies attacking Indian fishermen but says it conducts routine patrols and apprehends poachers detected illegally fishing in Sri Lankan Waters in order to protect the country's fisheries resources.
Indian fishermen, mainly from Tamil Nadu, illegally poaching in large scale with trawlers in Sri Lanka's waters, have become a serious threat to the livelihoods of Sri Lankan fishermen and they have urged the Sri Lankan authorities to prevent the Indian fishermen from stealing their livelihood.
