Oct 17, Colombo: A Marxist movement in Sri Lanka says the country is faced with a grave problem due to the government's policy on casinos and gambling.
The Anti Imperialist People's Movement affiliated to the Marxist party Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) says that attention needs to be paid to the matter since the government after approving projects to set up gaming centers in the country by passing new legislation, is now even trying to get parliament to approve two more gazette notifications on the same.
Convener of the Movement, Ven. Dambara Amila Thero said the proposed legislation is to be presented to parliament on the 24th and 25th of this month.
He explained that apart from permitting the gaming center proposed by Australian gaming tycoon, James Packer, the government has also issued a gazette notification granting permission for two other such projects on Glennie Street in Colombo 2 and Justice Akbar Mawatha.
"The government has identified these institutions to be necessary in a developed society," Ven. Amila Thero said.
He added that the massive exemptions offered to these projects could have been offered to industries engaged in the production process.
"We call on parliament to not allow the government to pass these gazette notifications on the 24th and 25th. For everyone to think about the country and the long term problems it could bring upon the people," Ven. Amila Thero added.
