Oct 15, Colombo: Central Committee of Sri Lanka's ruling Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) has decided to suspend the party membership of the Chairman of North Western Provincial Council.
Chairman Dharmasiri Dasanayaka is accused of contesting to the post at the first meeting of the newly elected North Western Provincial Council against the collective decision of the party.
SLFP had decided to field Indrani Dasanayaka as the Chairman and the newly sworn-in Chief Minister Dayasiri Jayasekera proposed her name to the Council.
However, Dharmasiri Dassanayaka nominated by the opposition United National Party (UNP) also contested to the post.
In a secret vote, Dharmasiri Dasanayaka defeated the government proposed member Indrani Dasanayaka by a majority of 8 votes.
SLFP Central Committee also decided to suspend the membership of Central Provincial Councilor L.D. Nimalsiri who contested for the Chairman post of the council against the party nominee Mahinda Abeykoon.
However, Abeykoon was elected as Chairman of the council with a majority vote.
Both councilors are likely to lose their Provincial Councilor positions.
