Oct 14, Colombo: Tamil National Alliance (TNA) councilor of Sri Lanka's Northern Provincial Council, M.K. Sivajilingam was sworn in today while eight other rebel councilors who boycotted last Friday's swearing-in ceremony in Jaffna postponed their oath taking.
Former TNA MP, Sivajilingam who represents Tamil Eelam Liberation Organization (TELO) insisted that the eight rebel councilors needed to be sworn in a temple in Vellamullivaikal where the final battle between the Army and the Tamil rebels took place.
Sivajilingam was sworn in here before a justice of peace.
Nine members of EPRLF, TELO and TULF protesting the ITAK, another constituent of the alliance, for taking decisions without consulting the other parties in the TNA, boycotted the swearing-in ceremony held at the Weerasingham Hall in Jaffna on October 11 under the patronage of Chief Minister C.V. Vigneswaran.
The dissidents later decided to hold their own swearing-in ceremony on Monday (14) in Vellamullivaikal. However they agreed to postpone the ceremony after the Bishop of Mannar Rayappu Joseph has come forward to mediate between the rebel MPs and the TNA leadership to resolve the discord.
The eight councilors will be sworn in before the Northern Provincial Council Chief Minister C.V. Vigneswaran on the day the inaugural meeting of the council will be held.
