Oct 14, Colombo: A Sri Lankan court Monday further remanded 23 Tamil Nadu fishermen arrested by the Sri Lankan Navy for poaching in the island's territorial waters.
Oorkavalthurai Judicial Magistrate Mahindhira Raja extended the detention of the two groups of fishermen from Kottaipattinam and till October 28, PTI reported.
The Sri Lankan Navy arrested 19 fishermen from Kottaipattinam in Pudukottai district with their four boats on September 19 and the other four fishermen from Rameswaram with their boat on October 3.
The fishermen have been detained in Jaffna prison.
Sri Lanka says Indian fishermen, taking advantage of Sri Lanka's procedure of releasing them after mediation by the Indian High Commission office, are deliberately indulge in illegal fishing.
Sri Lanka recently changed its policy on the Indian fishermen invading country's waters. Instead of the earlier method of 'catch and release' now the poaching fishermen will be detained and produced in court. The fishermen will be released after they plead guilty and their boats will be confiscated.
