Oct 12, Colombo: The extension of the Southern Expressway from Galle to Godagama in Matara will be completed by the end of this year, the Secretary to the Ministry of Highways Ranjith Premasiri has said.
The four-lane highway constructed at a cost of Rs. 25 billion will have to interchanges along the 35 kilometer distance between Galle and Matara. The two interchanges will be at Wathawana area in Galle Deniyaya Road and in Kokmaduwa along the Weligama Kananke Road.
According to the Ministry official, plans are afoot to further extend the expressway from Matara- Godagama to Hambantota Harbor via Beliatta, Andarawewa, and Mattala and feasibility studies for the proposed extension have already been completed. Surveys are now being done to acquire land for the 75km segment.
Once extended, the highway will provide fast and easy access to the Hambantota Harbor and the Mattala International Airport from the capital Colombo.
The Ministry also has plans to extend the Southern Expressway from Hambantota to Arugam Bay via Lunugamvehera connecting the Southern and Eastern P, the state radio SLBC reported.
