Oct 09, Colombo: The main opposition party of Sri Lanka, United National Party (UNP), today appointed the opposition leaders to the recently polled Northwestern and Central Provincial Councils.
J.C. Alawathuwala was appointed as the Opposition Leader of the Northwestern Provincial Council while Ranjith Aluwihare was appointed as the Opposition Leader of the Central Provincial Council.
The ruling party, United People's Freedom Alliance (UPFA) controls both provincial councils.
UNP won 16 seats in the Central Provincial Council and 12 seats in the Northwestern Provincial Council forming the major opposition there.
Meanwhile Mahinda Abeykoon of the UPFA was elected today as the Chairman of the Central Provincial Council by a majority vote. K.D. Nimalsiri of the same party that contested with him obtained 27 votes while Abeykoon obtained 29 votes.
