Oct 09, Colombo: Sri Lanka Minister of Sports Mahindananda Aluthgamage yesterday tabled a draft bill in parliament to strengthen the laws to curb the threat of illegal stimulants in sports.
According to the new laws, the athletes caught using banned drugs can be indicted in the High Court. They risk a two year rigorous imprisonment and a fine of Rs. 500,000 to one million.
In addition, the people who help the athletes to obtain banned drugs will also be prosecuted under the new laws.
Sri Lanka is a party to the International Convention against Doping in Sport |adopted on 19 October 2005 by UNESCO and the bill will make provision for the implementation in Sri Lanka of the convention by the establishing an Anti-Doping Agency.
The bill will be debated in the parliament shortly.
