Oct 06, Colombo: The Working Committee of crisis-ridden main opposition United National Party (UNP) of Sri Lanka will hold a crucial meeting tomorrow, party sources said.
Several resignations from the top posts of the party are expected at this meeting, sources say.
UNP national organizer Daya Gamage and the Treasurer Senarath Kapukotuwa have already resigned from their posts.
The internal crisis in the beleaguered party over the leadership has worsened with the party's humiliating defeat at the three Provincial Council elections held in September.
UNP internal sources say that the majority of the Working Committee is in the stance that the party needs an influential reform.
Recently, the former Deputy Leader Karu Jayasuriya was offered the membership in the Working Committee by the party leader Ranil Wickremasinghe but Jayasuriya rejected to accept it.
Sources say that key players in the party are proposing to elect Jayasuriya as the party leader to unify the fractured party which has suffered a series of defeats at every level of polls since 2001.
The failed leadership of Wickremasinghe is blamed for the defeats and disgruntled party members complain that despite numerous calls from within the party asking the leader to step down, the Working Committee which has a majority of Wickremasinghe loyalists has not taken any measures to reform the party.
