Oct 04, Colombo: General Secretary of Sri Lanka's main opposition United National Party (UNP), parliamentarian Tissa Attanayake has proposed the names of several party members to replace him in his position as electoral organizer of the Kundasale electorate in the Kandy District.
Attanayake handed his resignation from the post of party organizer of Kundasale following the party's defeat in the electorate at the recently concluded Central Provincial Council election.
Opposition and party Leader, Ranil Wickremasinghe declined to accept the resignation letter. However, he later accepted the letter saying that Attanayake had a greater role to play in the functions of the party.
UNP Spokesperson, parliamentarian Gayantha Karunathilaka told the media that Attanayake's resignation as the Kundasale organizer has been accepted by party leader Wickremasinghe.
He added that Attanayake who was appointed through the National List to the parliament would act in the same capacity in the future.
"Mr. Attanayake had tendered his resignation as the Kundasale organizer yesterday. He has recommended several names to be appointed as the new organizer. But the party will take a decision regarding the appointment in a few days," Karunathilaka said.
Meanwhile parliamentarian Karu Jayasuriya has declined to accept his re-appointment to the Working Committee. He has pointed out that accepting the Working Committee membership would lead to more rifts within the party as he was not the only person who had lost membership in the Working Committee.
