Oct 03, Colombo: Sri Lanka Navy has dispatched a team to rescue a group of illegally migrating Sri Lankans stranded in the deep sea after their boat met with an accident.
The Fisheries Ministry announced today that a group of 65 Sri Lankans traveling to Australia illegally have been stranded when their boat met with an accident about 215 nautical miles off the northern coastal belt.
Reportedly the migrants were stranded in the sea for several days without any communication with the land.
However, the Navy has been able to locate the boat and dispatch rescue teams, the state-run radio said.
Navy spokesman Commander Kosala Warnakulasuriya told the SLBC that the rescue team is expected to reach the boat by 8 pm today.
The Navy and the Ministry of Fisheries are conducting investigations into the incident.
