Oct 03, Colombo: The Sri Lankan government plans to temporarily suspend issuing vehicle permits to provincial councilors for a while.
The Local Government and Provincial Councils Ministry has reportedly decided to suspend the issuance of vehicle permits to provincial councilors for the next two and a half years.
Vehicle permits to provincial councilors were issued last January and many councilors therefore have received vehicle permits.
However, the government's decision would result in Chief Ministers and provincial councilors elected at the recently concluded PC polls not receiving new vehicle permits.
A Provincial Councilor is entitled to a vehicle permit worth US$ 40,000 plus an additional US$ 5,000 while a Chief Minister is entitled to US$ 50,000 plus an additional US$ 5000.
