Oct 03, Colombo: The Rehabilitation and Prison Reforms Ministry of Sri Lanka plans to implement the recommendations in the report submitted by the committee that probed the riot at the Welikada Prison last November that resulted in the death of at least 27 inmates and injuries to over 40 people including law enforcement personnel.
Ministry Secretary G.S. Vithanage said the committee had handed over the report including the recommendations to the Minister recently and 17 recommendations in the report will be implemented on an urgent basis.
Meanwhile Commissioner General of Prisons Chandraratna Pallegama said the Defence Ministry has been requested to monitor whether the prisons in the country meet the weapons requirement.
He explained that most repeater guns used by prison guards at present are faulty and outdated and the faulty weapons are a serious concern during prisoner transfers.
