Oct 01, Colombo: Sri Lanka marked the National Children's Day at an event held at the Lotus Pond Theater in Colombo Tuesday under the patronage of First Lady Shiranthi Rajapaksa.
The ceremony, held under the theme "Family Protects You", was organized by the Ministry of Child Development and Women's Affairs.
Addressing the function, the First Lady said Sri Lanka is heading towards a model country in Asia and the nation's children should therefore be prepared to become leaders in every field to reap the opportunities provided by the country's advancement.
She pointed out that for the nation to rise as a developed country, the family unit must be strong and peaceful and the children should receive the love and the protection from the parents and the family in order to make them physically and mentally sound, productive individuals.
Child Development and Women's Affairs Minister Tissa Karaliyadde said the government under the Mahinda Chintana concept is committed to enhance the security and welfare of the young generation and provide an environment for the children to develop physically and mentally.
A special stamp was also issued to mark the World Children's Day.
