Nov 04, Colombo: Internationally acclaimed Sri Lankan economist, diplomat and a former Secretary-General of the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) Dr. Gamani Corea passed away yesterday.
After a long illness Dr. Corea passed away at his residence in Horton Place, Colombo, on Sunday, one day shy of his 87th birthday which falls on November 04.
Dr. Corea was considered the chief architect of the national planning exercise of the Sri Lankan economy started in the early 1950s. He also led the economic liberalization exercise brought about in the mid-1960s. He served in Central Bank of Sri Lanka from 1950s until early 1970s.
He served as the Secretary-General of the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development from 1974 - 1984.
His cremation took place this afternoon at Borella General Cemetery in Colombo in a modest ceremony.
