Nov 01, Colombo: Karu Jayasuriya, the former Deputy Leader of Sri Lanka main opposition United National Party (UNP) has decided to accept the membership of party Working Committee that has been offered to him.
He was out of the UNP's highest executive body after he failed the bid for the party leadership at a Working Committee election held in December 2011.
Following the party's humiliating defeat at the provincial council elections held in September, the party leader Ranil Wickremasinghe responding to the discontent within the party over his leadership, recently offered the Working Committee membership to Jayasuriya but he declined it saying that some other UNP reformists also had lost the Working Committee membership.
Jayasuriya decided to accept the offer on the request of the party's Buddhist monks' organization, the United Bhikku Front.
He has been proposed to the chairmanship of the leadership council that is to be appointed soon as a solution to the party's crisis over Wickremasinghe's leadership.
Accordingly, Jayasuriya will participate in the UNP Working Committee meeting that will be held on November 04.
