* Sri Lanka appoints a High Commissioner to Uganda

July 29, Colombo: Sri Lanka has appointed Velupillai Kananathan, as the country's High Commissioner to the Commonwealth state of Uganda.

Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksa presented Kananathan his official appointment letter this morning at the President's office.

Until today's official appointment as High Commissioner Kananathan was Sri Lanka's honorary Consul in Uganda.

Sri Lanka and Uganda has been strengthening bilateral relations in recent times. Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksa made his second official visit to Uganda in May and his Ugandan counterpart President Museveni made his first visit to Sri Lanka last year in November.

President Rajapaksa during his visit to Uganda to attend the 2013 Commonwealth Local Governments Conference in May this year opened the new High Commission of Sri Lanka in Kampala.

A Sri Lankan mission in Uganda is expected to strengthen the bilateral relationship between the two countries and promote trade and investment in various sectors.

Secretary to the President Lalith Weeratunga was also present at the occasion.
