July 29, Colombo: Sri Lanka has appointed Velupillai Kananathan, as the country's High Commissioner to the Commonwealth state of Uganda.

Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksa presented Kananathan his official appointment letter this morning at the President's office.

Until today's official appointment as High Commissioner Kananathan was Sri Lanka's honorary Consul in Uganda.

Sri Lanka and Uganda has been strengthening bilateral relations in recent times. Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksa made his second official visit to Uganda in May and his Ugandan counterpart President Museveni made his first visit to Sri Lanka last year in November.

A Sri Lankan mission in Uganda is expected to strengthen the bilateral relationship between the two countries and promote trade and investment in various sectors.
