July 05, Colombo: Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksa has issued a directive to the Elections Commissioner Mahinda Deshapriya today to hold the elections for the Northern Provincial Council, President's office said.
Meanwhile, the governors of the North-Western Province and Central Province Tissa R. Balalle and Tikiri Kobbekaduwa respectively have approved the dissolution of the two provincial councils.
The official gazette notifications announcing the dissolution of the two provinces will be issued today following the official request by the two Chief Ministers Athula Wijesinghe of the North-Western Province and Sarath Ekanayake of the Central Province to dissolve the councils one year before the their terms expire.
Accordingly the two councils will be dissolved Friday (July 05) midnight.
Elections for the three provinces will be held in late September, according to the Election Secretariat.
The Election Commissioner earlier said that elections for the three Provincial Councils will be held on September 21 or 28.
The Election Commissioner will release the gazette notification calling nominations within 7 days after dissolving the Provincial Councils.
