* Democratic Party of Sri Lanka to contest provincial councils independently
Wed, Jul 3, 2013, 12:34 pm SL Time, ColomboPage News Desk, Sri Lanka.

July 03, Colombo: The newly registered Democratic Party of Sri Lanka, led by the former Army Commander Sarath Fonseka, announced yesterday that it would contest the upcoming elections for the three provincial councils without allying with other parties.

Party sources said the Democratic Party is in the process of compiling nominations for the three provincial councils. A number of former military personnel are to be included in the nomination lists, they said.

Addressing a press conference held in Colombo yesterday, Fonseka said that a new constitution is needed for the benefit of the country.

Elections for the Northern, Northwestern and Central Provincial Councils are to be held in September.
